Walking the Steep City

Vigo's centre is laid out vertically: the cruise port and Casco Vello sit at sea level, while García Barbón, the Praza de Compostela and most hotels are 30-80 m above. The Castro park is at 180 m. There is an OUTDOOR ESCALATOR system (Rúa Río Tomás Alonso, Calvario) that climbs the steepest sections, free to use, but you must carry small dogs and big dogs on the wider stretches need very firm leash control to avoid pulling on the moving stair. Plan a flat route via the harbour-front Avenida da Beiramar for easier walking with a senior or short-legged dog.
